On Indra
Based on the family books of the Rig Veda
In the illustrious hymns of Rig Veda Mandala 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, Indra stands forth as the preeminent deity, a vibrant and dynamic figure embodying strength, courage, and supreme dominion over both cosmic and terrestrial realms. He is celebrated as the divine warrior, the bringer of order, and the benevolent patron who ceaselessly delivers his devotees from distress, showering them with wealth and vitality. The verses intricately weave together his heroic exploits, his indispensable role in maintaining the cosmic structure, and his profound relationship with human worshippers.
Indra's cosmic deeds and legendary battles define his unparalleled power. He is hailed as the one "who, being born, first, intelligent, encompassed the Devas with his might" [1]. His very "might" makes "heaven and earth tremble" [2]. His most famous exploit, recounted with fervor, is the slaying of Vritra, the serpentine demon who obstructed the cosmic waters. Indra "smashed Vritra, who held back the waters" [3], striking him with his thunderbolt and releasing the "seven rivers" to flow freely to the sea [4]. This act is not merely a physical victory but a cosmic restoration, as it also leads to the generation of the "sun" and the discovery of "cows" (symbolizing light and abundance) from darkness [5]. Beyond Vritra, Indra's thunderbolt strikes down numerous other malevolent forces and demons: he slew Dribhika and brought forth the cows from Vala's stronghold [6], crushed Urana with his "ninety-nine arms" [7], vanquished Svashna, Sushna, Vyamsa, Pipru, Namuci, and Rudhikra [8]. He is celebrated for shattering "a hundred forts of Shambara" with his stone (thunderbolt) [9] and casting down a hundred thousand enemies upon the earth [10]. His power over the Dasyus (enemies of the Aryas) is absolute; he "cast down the Dasyu to the left" and "made light for the Arya" [11]. Through his might, he broke open Vala's cave, scattering the firm places of the mountain [12], and even in a dream, he overcame Chumuri and Dhuni, protecting his devotee Dabhiti [13]. He "smashes down the growing Vritra, the Piyaru" and "strikes down the footless Kunāru with his might" [16]. He is the "breaker of Vala's enclosure of cows" [17]. He "drives away the waters held back by Vritra" [18] and "breaks the stone" that concealed them [19]. In essence, Rig Veda Mandala 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 portray Indra as a dynamic and indispensable force within the Vedic cosmos. He is the ultimate champion against chaos and evil, a mighty architect of the universe, and a generous benefactor to humanity. His thunderbolt-wielding prowess, coupled with his cosmic authority and unwavering support for his devotees, cements his position as one of the most celebrated and invoked deities in the Rigvedic pantheon. He is ever-present, ever-powerful, and ever-ready to answer the calls of those who offer him praise and Soma.
